Stanford State of AI

Stanford University released a thicc 386-page report titled β€œThe State of AI in 2023”. You can read through it (if you dare), or if you don't have time for 386 pages, Lorenzo Green posted some key takeaways on Twitter. Here are some of our favorites:

High Environmental Costs of Training AI 🌱

Training for GPT-3 emitted carbon levels equal to 1800 round trips from San Fransisco to New York. That's close to the output of nearly half of Jeff Bezos' mega yachts 😜

CO2 Emmissions graph showing GPT-3 is far ahead of car and air travel.

AI controversies & incidents up 26x since 2012 ⚠️

Issues include Deepfakes, face recognition, and surveillance technology. Pretty soon, Zoom will be alerting your boss during meetings when it senses you've tuned out and started thinking about whether you want Thai or pizza for dinner.

Google's People + AI Guidebook

AI isn't just about technology that can create the Pixar version of you; it's also about the human experience. Google's People + AI Guidebook is a great resource that focuses on the intersection of people and AI. It takes a user-centric approach, emphasizing the importance of designing AI systems that align with human needs and values. The guidebook is loaded with tips, case studies, and design principles that are structured in a very β€œdigestible” format. It's a great jumpstart if you're looking to include AI in your product while keeping humans at the heart of your designs.

One of the best tips they offer? Determine if AI adds value to your design. Before you start chucking AI into your product, make sure the feature that you have in mind requires AI, or would be enhanced by it.

Google Pair 🍐

People + AI Research (PAIR) is a multidisciplinary team at Google that explores the human side of AI. They're doing amazing work in research, tooling, frameworks, and more. Remember that time we mentioned the People + AI Guidebook? That sweet resource is just one of the great resources PAIR has produced.

Why UIs and Chatbots like ChatGPT Won't Replace Humans

Just like a tired 90s band with 3 hits, we saved the best resource for last. Or at least, the editors pick for best read 🌟 This article from Exorva details the many reasons (with examples) why traditional user interfaces aren't going away any time soon.

No Visual Affordances + Laborious Typing

A big issue of these GPT-interfaces is that they're nothing more than a text box, which doesn't give the user any visual affordances as to what they can or can't do. To make things worse, sometimes it's just way faster to click an option than type out a bunch of words.

Imagine if Amazon rolled out a ChatGPT interface and you were forced to type out β€œincrease quantity of Coconut Non-Clumping Cat Litter by 2” – we'd probably all prefer to just click the plus βŠ• icon in the cart. Read the full post here πŸ‘‰
